Your online status is actually visible to everyone that you guys add to your contacts. There is actually no way to disable your ‘ Online status’ on WhatsApp. However, WhatsApp does let you select the audience for your ‘ Last seen’ notification. So they may also appear online if they have just closed the app 2 to 3 seconds prior. Most of the time, this is in the range of 2 to 3 seconds after the person has closed the app as well. That being said, the app does take a few seconds in order to reflect the change. If you guys close the app or even minimize it in order to open another app, you guys will go offline on WhatsApp. The app will also show a user online only if they are actively using the app. WhatsApp’s online status is actually really accurate. Even if the user is simply on the chats page and scrolling through a lot of chats, the user will be displayed online. The online status will also appear even if the user has left WhatsApp on and their screen is actually on. But, it does not necessarily mean that the user is chatting along with someone. It means that the app is actually running in the foreground and has an active internet connection. The online status on WhatsApp basically indicates that the user is currently via the app. This is actually the most common assumption whenever dealing with online statuses. Does online on WhatsApp mean they are talking to someone? The online status of the person is below their name in their chat window as well. Rather, you guys have to enter a person’s chat window to find out. So, unlike Facebook or any other social media app, WhatsApp does not really have an indicator on the home page itself that lets users know who is online and who really isn’t.
